glee britney spears episode review

This week Glee has a Brittany Pierce-centric episode, paying tribute to Britney Spears. This was a fun episode, and it was great to see Heather Morris steal the show for once, instead of the episode being dominated by Lea Michele. Don’t get me wrong, Lea is a wonderful singer and has the pipes, but it’s nice to see another cast member strut their talent.

This episode pushed the gauntlet from from all angles:  Will has a mini-midlife crisis, and Sue inflames what she calls a “sex riot.”  The music was great, and the sequences were well planned and staged. Here is my gripe with all the flash and panache this episode–I felt it distracted from the overall story of the show, and I felt great dialogue and plot progression was dropped in favor of imitating Britney Spears videos.  I’d had my fill of Britney Spears by the time the episode ended with Lea’s rendition of Paramore’s “The Only Exception.”

This episode was fun to watch, but it did not make me feel bubbly inside like previous Glee episodes. Beiste was glossed over this episode and rather quickly allowed Finn back on the team. Artie was also allowed to join the team. It all seemed rather uncharacteristic from Glee’s newest cast member. Speaking of new cast members, John Stamos joins the cast as Emma’s new dentist boyfriend. This does not bode well with Will, and I look forward to a possible musical showdown between the two. Considering that Stamos is a musical performer, that would be fun to watch.

Now that I have seen two episodes of season two, I would have to say thus far I think season one is still tops for me. I really hope the next epsiodes build on the  plot and tune down the tribute episodes. I think the show is better when the songs vary in the episode, which tends to also makes it more well-rounded musically. I am not saying this new season is a total flop after only two episodes; I am saying that I hold Glee to higher entertainment standards after its electrifying first season. The cast choices for season two have been well thought out and should prove to be fun to watch. I am really hoping Beiste gets a chance to perform like Sue last season.

Oh, and a quick shout out to the makeup and costume crew: a thumbs up for making Heather Morris a Britney clone; there were few times I could not tell the difference. See you next week…
