Frankie EdgarA rematch between UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and top contender Gray Maynard is set to headline UFC 125 on January 1 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, MMA Fighting today confirmed.

The rematch was first rumored for UFC 125 earlier this month in the wake of August’s UFC 118, which saw Edgar (13-1) defend the title over former champ BJ Penn, while Maynard remained unbeaten over Kenny Florian to earn a shot at the belt.

Maynard scored a unanimous decision for Edgar’s lone career loss in their first meeting in April 2008, but Edgar passed Maynard for a title shot earlier this year and made the most of the opportunity by upsetting Penn.

With Edgar-Maynard now set for the UFC 125 fight card, a matchup between middleweight champ Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort will likely headline UFC 127, the UFC’s Super Bowl weekend event on February 5 in Las Vegas.
