Putting life back into Hong Kong's tong lau apartments

Putting life back into Hong Kong's tong lau apartments
Hong Kong apartment

You can hardly walk down a street in Hong Kong without coming across a building that is in some stage of demolition. In the midst of a property bubble, the buildings taking most of the brunt are low-rise tong laus, the walk-up apartment buildings that are to Hong Kong what brownstones are to New York and courtyard houses to Beijing.

Most tong laus were built in a boom period between 1956 and 1962, when the economy recovered from an early-1950s slump and thousands of migrants began pouring into Hong Kong from the mainland.

Dan Savage Explains Why He Started 'It Gets Better' Project

Dan Savage Explains Why He Started 'It Gets Better' Project

'When a gay teenager commits suicide, it's because he can't picture a life for himself that's filled with joy,' columnist tells MTV News.
By James Montgomery

Dan Savage
Photo: MTV News

Last Thursday, in his syndicated sex-advice column "Savage Love," Dan Savage wrote about the case of Billy Lucas, a 15-year-old high school student in Indiana who committed suicide after being taunted by his classmates for being gay.

In the column — titled "Give 'Em Hope," from a quote by openly gay politician Harvey Milk — Savage, himself an openly gay man, lamented that he couldn't have sat down with Lucas, even for five minutes, and told him "however bad things were, however isolated and alone he was, it gets better."

But then he realized that, while it was too late to talk to Billy Lucas, it wasn't too late to talk to the millions of kids just like him. So, right then and there, he and his husband decided to do just that. They sat down in front of a camera and told their stories about their horrific high school experiences and, more importantly, how they both survived, thrived and have gone on to live happy, healthy, joyful lives. They posted the video on YouTube and asked other gay, bisexual and transgender adults to do the same. And that's when the It Gets Better project began.

"I posted something to my blog about Billy Lucas — who might not have even been gay, he wasn't out if he was gay, and not all kids who experience anti-gay bullying are gay — but he was bullied for being gay. ... And I was reading about him and about Justin Aaberg [another teenager who committed suicide after being bullied at school] in Minnesota, and the reaction as an openly gay adult, always, when you read these stories is, 'I wish I could've talked to this kid for five minutes, so I could've told him it gets better,' " Savage told MTV News on Thursday (September 30). "And it occurred to me, when I was really turning over the Billy Lucas case in my mind, that I could talk to these kids. ... I could use social media, I could go on YouTube, I could make a digital video and I could post it, and I could directly address them and tell them, 'It gets better.'

"When a gay teenager commits suicide, it's because he can't picture a life for himself that's filled with joy and family and pleasure and is worth sticking around for," he continued. "So I felt it was really important that, as gay adults, we show them that our lives are good and happy and healthy and that there's a life worth sticking around for after high school."

Of course, the issue of the bullying — and digital abuse — of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender teenagers isn't a new one, but for the most part, coverage has been limited to local news. Sadly, that's changed in recent days, with the apparent suicide of 18-year-old Rutgers University freshman Tyler Clementi, who reportedly leapt from the George Washington Bridge after his roommate secretly taped (and subsequently posted) video of him having a sexual encounter with another man.

Suddenly, unwittingly, the It Gets Better project became national news too. And while getting his message out to the masses — or, as he puts it, "those who need to see these videos" — is important, the sad thing, according to Savage, is that it's too late for Clementi.

"Anybody whose privacy was invaded the way Tyler Clementi's privacy was invaded would've been outraged, humiliated and embarrassed and angry, but we have to ask ourselves: What pushed him to suicide?" Savage said. "I believe that this video invasion of his privacy, this streaming of this intimate, private moment, this outing was the last straw. And I suspect that Tyler Clementi, as we find out more about him, we'll find that he was a victim of bullying in high school, bullying in middle school ... It's really hard to look at this suicide and not see, perhaps, the culmination of years and years of abuse, and a moment — for Tyler Clementi — of despair."

And with the Clementi case making headlines nationwide, It Gets Better has been flooded with videos from all around the world of LGBT men and women looking to share their stories, to spread hope. The outpouring of support has been tremendous, but Savage knows that, sadly, the mainstream media will soon shift its focus away from the issue. That's why he promises It Gets Better will continue on forever, if possible.

"It's been so overwhelming, [and] we want to create an archive that lives online forever, for each generation of gay kids coming up, so they can go there and they can see these stories," he said. "I'm hearing from mothers of bullied gay teenagers who are sitting down to watch these videos together and taking such hope for their futures, and that's what I want to see. I want to see the people who need to see these videos finding their way to them. Not just today or tomorrow, but whenever."

MTV's ongoing "A Thin Line" project also provides stories and resources for anyone who believes they are being cyberbullied or who is looking for ways to stop harassment by digital means.

Deluxe edition will contain new songs 'Ours,' 'If This Was a Movie' and 'Superman.'
By James Dinh

In less than a week, Taylor Swift will begin to unveil tracks from her autobiographical new album, Speak Now, every week until its release. What fans won't hear during the countdown are any of the additional tracks available on the deluxe edition of the album, which is only available at Target. The mega-retailer has posted details on its exclusive CD/DVD package, including the expanded album's track list.

In addition to the standard 14-song set, the deluxe edition will include the new tracks "Ours," "If This Was a Movie" and "Superman." It's only expected that the teen sensation would offer fans bonus material, as she's explained that the album was a full of two year's worth of firsthand experiences. Swift has also stripped down three tracks and given fans a bonus disc with a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the video for album's lead single, "Mine," as well as the official clip itself.

Earlier this month, the songstress revealed that she was excited to treat fans to the deluxe edition of the album, saying, "I'm all about being able to give the fans special extras whenever I can, so I love that this version has video footage and even some additional songs."

In the recently revamped biography on her website, Swift writes about her fans.

"I've loved my fans from the very first day, but they've said things and done things recently that make me feel like they're my friends — more now than ever before," she writes. "I'll never go a day without thinking about our memories together."

Near the end of her bio, the superstar touches on why it was so important to incorporate her personal experiences into the new album.

"I only have the option of writing about things that happen in my life, so thankfully a LOT has happened in my life in the last two years," she writes. "I know I don't always say the right thing at the right time or speak up when I should, but I write it all down. I get my guitar and a pen and all of a sudden, I have a chance to say exactly what I meant to say in real life. Some of the things I wrote about are things everyone saw me go through. Some of the things I wrote about are things nobody ever knew about. I'm beyond excited for you to hear these stories and confessions."

The Speak Now (Deluxe Edition) track list, according to Target.com:

1. "Mine"
2. "Sparks Fly"
3. "Back to December"
4. "Speak Now"
5. "Dear John"

Britney Spears Is 'Magical' On 'Glee,' Stars Say

'It's going to be Spearstacular,' says Heather Morris.

Britney Spears' long-anticipated "Glee" episode debuts on Tuesday night (September 28). And the cast of the Fox hit promises that the show will live up to its high expectations.

"People that love this show or even like this show, they're going to love this episode," John Stamos teased in an interview posted online. "I don't feel like Britney stole my thunder ... maybe a little. Well, it's her show. [The episode is] called 'Britney/Brittany.' "

Stamos plays a key role in the episode. His character, Dr. Carl Howell, gives Brittany (Heather Morris) and Santana (Naya Rivera) the anesthesia that prompts their trippy ride through the singer's hit-filled catalog. Morris noted that Britney and Brittany will also throw down on the dance floor: "They're going to dance together," she said of her character and the pop star.

"When I was younger she was, like, my idol," Morris continued. " '[I'm a] Slave [4 U]' is, like, the best video ever. I am, like, literally an inch away from Britney Spears, who I used to watch on television and, like, learn dance moves to. ... It's going to be Spearstacular."

Like Morris, Rivera has warm memories of growing up a Spears fan. "I love Britney Spears. I mean, who doesn't? We all grew up with her," she said. "The first music purchase I ever made was ' ... Baby One More Time' on cassette. [It was like], Britney Spears is going to be in my mitts, what do I do? [And I was like], 'Hi Britney!' And then she was like, 'Hey!' She was awesome and beautiful. She was, like, magical."

Corey Monteith teased that his performance will be worth watching. "I am very excited about performing the 'Toxic' number. It's going to be very cool," he dished. "It's going to be an interpretation of the song you would not see coming."

The cast will also cover Spears classics like "Stronger" and "Me Against the Music."

Which song are you most looking forward to on the Britney episode? Let us know in the comments!

Vitor Belfort Confirms Super Bowl Weekend Showdown with Anderson Silva

Vitor Belfort Confirms Super Bowl Weekend Showdown with Anderson Silva

UFC Middleweight Vitor Belfort

As expected, UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva will defend his title against Vitor Belfort during the biggest football weekend of the year. The challenger confirmed the February 5th date on his Twitter account Thursday afternoon.

“Hey guys look like I will be fighting on [feb] on superbowl week,” Belfort posted.

Belfort was scheduled for a top contender scrap with Yushin Okami at UFC 122, but was presented with an unexpected opportunity courtesy of Chael Sonnen’s failed UFC 117 drug test. The alleged PED abuser was awarded an immediate rematch with Silva, however his tainted performance quickly put that chatter to bed.

UFC president Dana White confirmed Belfort would be granted his shot at the crown last week, however wasn’t certain when Silva and his banged up ribs would be ready to go. Octagon brass were hoping for either UFC 125 on New Year’s Day or during Super Bowl weekend, but Ed Soares, Silva’s manager, hinted last week it might be closer to pigskin time because his client’s side was “still very tender.

Belfort knocked out former middleweight champ Rich Franklin in a 195-pound catchweight bout in his last outing. Since his September 2009 return to the Octagon, he had his shoulder surgically repaired and cautiously went about his rehab. Now that the former UFC light heavyweight champ is fully healed, he’ll be looking to viciously dethrone the division’s king.

Speaking of royalty, there aren’t many fighters that warrant G.O.A.T. status more than “The Spider.” Up until his miraculous come-from-behind victory over Sonnen – and it appears we now know why the champ was pushed to those depths – nobody legitimately threatened his reign.

The planet’s deadliest assassin is prefect through his last 13 contests.

The Las Vegas Strip is expected to host the shootout, but no word on whether it will be at the Mandalay Bay Event Center or larger MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Would Lindsay Lohan Be Helped By A Conservatorship?

Would Lindsay Lohan Be Helped By A Conservatorship?

Troubled actress' family reportedly looking into taking over her affairs.
By Gil Kaufman

It looks like troubled actress Lindsay Lohan might be borrowing a page out of the Britney Spears playbook. Much like Spears, who emerged from a troubled period of erratic behavior, legal problems and forced hospitalization thanks to a strict conservatorship overseen by her father, Lohan's family is reportedly considering putting a similar program in place to help her get her stalled career, and life, back on track in light of her latest trip to rehab.

Spears began to emerge from a dangerous career spiral in early 2008 when her father was named conservator of her estate, giving him control over the management of her personal and financial affairs, as well as her health care. In Spears' case, that power extends to hiring security guards, removing people from his daughter's residence, approving or revoking contracts on her behalf and having access to her medical records and limiting who can visit her in the hospital.

CNN reported Thursday (September 30) that following Lohan's decision to check into rehab this week in the wake of her recent jailing for a failed drug test, her estranged father, Michael Lohan, is considering a similar program. Michael was slated to meet with a lawyer on Thursday as preparation for an appearance before the judge in Lindsay's case to ask that he give approval for two conservators to assume control over Lindsay's day-to-day affairs.

In the typical chaos that surrounds the fractured Lohan family, though, Michael was reportedly rushing to file conservatorship papers before his ex-wife, Dina Lohan, and Lindsay's manager, Lou Taylor (who has also worked with Britney), file their own request to serve as Lindsay's conservators.

"Since Dina and Lou are going to try to be co-conservators, I had a choice of fighting it or petitioning for the purpose of appointing two conservators who don't have an interest in Lindsay's money, but rather her as a person and human being," Michael Lohan said. His plan calls for one conservator to oversee Lindsay's finances and another to handle the more personal aspects of her life, from what she eats and wears to where she lives and who she can associate with.

"I just want Lindsay's life and career to be guided by people who are in it with their hearts, not their hands," Michael Lohan said.

Lindsay checked into rehab in Southern California on Monday and is expected to remain there until a probation violation hearing on October 22, at which point it's possible a judge could send her back to jail for the positive drug test, which violates the terms of the actress' probation.

Spears was back in court herself Thursday for a meeting with a judge to review the status of her conservatorship. TMZ reported that the brief meeting resulted in Judge Reba Goetz saying that "at this time, all orders will remain in full force and effect."

By most accounts, Spears has thrived under the reportedly very strict measure enforced by her father, Jamie, in her conservatorship, getting her musical career back on track and mounting one of the most successful tours of 2009.

Ten years out of the spotlight didn't put a damper on Sade's shine, as the runaway success of her latest LP, Soldier of Love, proves. The British songstress owned the Billboard charts earlier this year with a collection of signature soulful cuts, which spent weeks at the top spot and scored more than 800, 000 scans within a month of its February release.

Now the Nigerian-born songstress is packing up her band and hitting the road in support of her sixth studio album. According to a post on Sade.com, the singer will head out on her first world tour in a decade and will launch the North American leg next summer. Tickets for certain dates will go on sale October 16.

Although a New York City stop was not announced at press time, charity-minded Gotham dwellers will get the chance to check out the Grammy-winning legend onstage on Thursday (September 30): Sade is slated to perform at the seventh annual Black Ball NY, which is organized by Alicia Keys' Keep a Child Alive organization, at the city's Hammerstein Ballroom alongside Jay-Z.

Earlier this year, Keys expressed her excitement about having the soul-music superstar participate in this year's event. "Sade? Jay-Z? Both icons and both major influences of mine," Keys said in a statement. "I am overwhelmed by their generosity in helping us continue the tradition of making the Black Ball the best fundraiser in NYC."

Sade tour dates so far, according to her website:

Heidi Montag Calls Off Divorce From Spencer Pratt

Heidi Montag Calls Off Divorce From Spencer Pratt

Montag filed for divorce in July, citing 'irreconcilable differences.'
By Jocelyn Vena

Heidi Montag has decided to call off her divorce from Spencer Pratt, TMZ reports.

According to the website, Montag filed a motion for dismissal at L.A. County Superior Court on Wednesday. She originally filed for divorce from her former "Hills" co-star in July citing "irreconcilable differences." Pratt's rep had not responded to MTV News' requests for comment by press time.

Montag made no secret of their reunion earlier this month when she tweeted about Pratt shortly after they returned from a trip to Costa Rica. "First few days back in America! I dont think I will ever leave again, at least I am never letting @SpencerPratt pack again!!!! Praise Jesus!"

But, since the divorce filing, the pair have also been open about the seeming dissolution of their marriage. Pratt claimed to have a sex tape featuring Montag and threatened to release it if she didn't take him back; Montag denied the tape's existence.

When MTV News spoke to Pratt over the summer about the rumors and his wife's intentions to divorce him, he was quick to point out that there was still a lot of love between the two. "I'm obsessed with her," he shared. "We're Speidi. If I could change my face and name, she would have never divorced me."

At the time, Pratt said he and Montag were trying to figure out what they should do next. "We're working things through," he said. "Clearly I care for her, but the divorce is a superficial title 'cause I didn't cheat on her. And then she divorces me to clean her image. That doesn't fly with me. As much as I was like, 'Do it' [with the divorce], I never thought it would work. You can't be Speidi and then all of a sudden get a divorce. She's still serious about it because she's trying to divorce what is Spencer Pratt. She still loves me.'

In fact, Pratt said he was taking steps toward changing for her. "I gave away all my crystals. I gave all my crystals to my old middle school," he said. "So no more crystals, woo woo woo."

What do you think about Speidi reconciling? Let us know in the comments.

Kanye Suspends 'G.O.O.D. Friday' Series After 'Lost In The World' Leak

'It's messed up that one hacker can mess everything up,' he says.

Way to go, hackers — now you've gone and messed up a G.O.O.D. thing.

Kanye West has decided to suspend his "G.O.O.D. Fridays" series — in which he planned to provide fresh tracks every week through Christmas — for one week after a track from his forthcoming album, the Bon Iver-sampling "Lost in the World," hit the Internet on Wednesday (September 29).

"Due to blogs leaking unfinished songs from my actual album I've decided to pass of Good Fridays this week," West tweeted late Wednesday. He continued: "It's messed up that one hacker can mess everything up for everyone ... I love to take a year to finish my songs and deliver them to you guys in there most completed form.

"It would have seemed like since I give free music every week even the lowest form of human being would respect that enough not to leak unfinished songs from my real album," an agitated West added.

While West did not specify what had set him off, it appears that the leak of "Lost" angered him. The haunting song samples folkie Bon Iver's "Woods" and includes lyrics from legendary urban poet/musician Gil Scott-Heron. The song is the third from the rapper's still-untitled upcoming album to make its way online, following the rousing "Power," which surfaced in May, and the sardonic "Runaway," which 'Ye premiered during the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards.

Earlier, West had agonized over his inability to decide on a title for the album. He is also still contemplating its release date, which is rumored to be November 22. "I'm finished with it, but when should I drop?" he asked. Although there are still a few finishing touches to be made: He later added that four engineers are mixing the album so it can be finished as soon as possible, and he's talked about corralling some guests.

"In the lab with Soulja Boy and Cudi," he wrote early Thursday morning. "2 of my favorite most genius artist. Even in my disappointment about the leaks I feel blessed."
