During Friday’s UFC 129 Q&A session, UFC president Dana White teased fans with the prospects of an upcoming rule change that will take place inside of his Octagon. According to MMA’s ultimate shot caller, the UFC expects to host five-round non-title fights in the very near future.
Well, exactly how soon is soon? White claimed they were about to debut the change at UFC 131.
“We were actually going to start it with Brock Lesnar and Junior Dos Santos, but we had already made the fight,” White stated. “We had already made the fight, so it’s kind of hard to go back to those guys after you already make the fight and say ‘You know what, this is going to be five [rounds] instead of three.
“We’re very close to doing it.”
On June 11th inside Rogers Arena in Vancouver, Canada, “The Ultimate Fighter 13” coaches will determine who gets first dibs at Cain Velasquez’s heavyweight title.
Under the UFC’s current rules, only championship bouts are allowed to go five rounds. All other fights take place within a three round window. Regardless, each stanza runs five minutes.
With this option soon available, fanatics won’t have to worry about potential blockbuster bouts lasting a max of just 15 minutes. It also makes catchweight scraps that much more appealing.
