Haley Reinhart Has 'A Lot Of Faith' In Post-'American Idol' Career

Haley Reinhart Has 'A Lot Of Faith' In Post-'American Idol' Career

'I'm really, really lucky to have some strong women that have powerful voices that are coming back into the scene,' she tells MTV News.
By Gil Kaufman

Haley Reinhart

Haley Reinhart had a memorably bumpy ride on the just-completed 10th season of link type="content" id="1486475">"American Idol." She fell down during her final performance night, got dinged by judge Randy Jackson on a number of occasions in an otherwise-sunshiny season of high praise for most of the top finishers and almost had to take the stage at the last minute as a finale sub when eventual runner-up Lauren Alaina suffered a vocal-cord malady on the last performance night.

So is Haley bitter about her seesaw season or worried that her third-place finish means her sultry blues sound didn't click with America?

"I'm really, really lucky to have some strong women that have powerful voices that are coming back into the scene ... that's very inspiring, because that's what I've wanted to do for a while," she told MTV News on Tuesday (May 31), mentioning such icons as Amy Winehouse, Corinne Bailey Rae, Grammy-winning jazz bassist Esperanza Spalding, Duffy and Janelle Mone as her inspirations.

"All these chicks have a really, really cool, unique sound, and I'm really thankful that this is coming about, because it's the right time for me right now. It's happening, and I have so much throwback that's come along with me, and it seems like it might be a stretch to get there, but especially now with this new wave coming through, with this raw, refreshing good musicality being provided, I have really good feelings and a lot of faith."

Reinhart is already looking ahead to the time after this summer's "Idol" tour, when she hopes to put out some of the funky, R&B/soul style of music she likes to write. "I never wrote anything with the real rock there, so I would like to touch on that," she said, promising that her debut album will be a mix of sultry soul and rock.

Get your "Idol" fix on MTV News' "American Idol" page, where you'll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.

If it's not enough to know that all of your favorite stars will be attending, presenting or performing at this year's MTV Movie Awards — which they will be — MTV News will be all over the event: behind the scenes, front and center, everywhere, to bring you the most exclusive insider information.

Here, we have a sneak peek at the official 2011 Movie Awards gift bag, which will be presented to celebrities at the show. This year's gift bag features a bevy of products from name-brand companies including Starbucks, Casio, Murad, Mattel, Ralph Lauren Fragrances and Lacoste.

There are too many goodies to name, but a few of the highlights include a $50 Starbucks card, Ralph Lauren Fragrances' Big Pony Collection scents for men and the Romance & Summer Romance for women, a Kobo eReader loaded with 100 books, a Casio TRYX camera, and a two-night stay and specially designed bag from Andaz 5th Avenue.

"Twilight" fans might be excited to learn that Pro Beauty Tools is gifting celebrities with a bunch of their professional hair-styling tools, the standout being the styling brush used on the set of "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn."

"The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" leads the Golden Popcorn nominations this year with eight nods — including Best Movie, Best Fight and Best Kiss — narrowly besting the dream thieves of "Inception" (seven nods) and the wizards of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1" (six nods). All three films have been nominated for Best Movie and will compete with "Black Swan" (four nods) and "The Social Network"(five nods) for the night's top prize.

The list of presenters on the show keeps growing too, currently including Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Steve Carell, Emma Stone, Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Josh Duhamel, Patrick Dempsey, Cameron Diaz, Jason Segel, Jesse Eisenberg, Aziz Ansari, Danny McBride, Nicki Minaj, Selena Gomez, Leighton Meester and Katie Cassidy, with more appearances and performers to be announced soon.

The 2011 MTV Movie Awards will be hosted by actor/comedian Jason Sudeikis and will be broadcast live from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California, on Sunday, June 5, at 9 p.m. ET on MTV.

Report: Roy Nelson Had Walking Pneumonia Prior to UFC 130 Loss to Frank Mir

Report: Roy Nelson Had Walking Pneumonia Prior to UFC 130 Loss to Frank Mir

Roy Nelson UFC

While most Americans were firing up their BBQ pits on Monday to celebrate Memorial Day, UFC heavyweight Roy Nelson was rushed to the emergency room to have his “gas tank” checked out.

“now the docs wants to put me on the juice (steroids), plus I have a new @TrainingMask @ufc @danawhite,” Nelson tweeted along with the picture above.

He followed up about an hour later from inside the Las Vegas, Nevada hospital with, “Gas tank is broke I have walking pneumonia, doc says he going to fix the roy 1.001.”

According to Jessy Nelson, Roy’s wife, the former IFL heavyweight champion had walking pneumonia during the first two weeks of this month. It appears Nelson may have never fully recovered, as he was experiencing a unique pain with his lungs yesterday.

“He described the feeling like someone is taking a big scab off of his lungs,” Jessy told Yahoo! Sports on Monday.

According to WebMD, walking pneumonia is a non-medical term to describe a mild case of pneumonia. Tiredness and mild flu-like symptoms, such as fever and chills, are typical indicators.

Although the infection can make one miserable, it’s known as the least scary kind of pneumonia. “In fact, you could have walking pneumonia and not even know it.” Or in Nelson’s case, continue fighting and not even know it.

The former “Ultimate Fighter 10″ winner posted a disappointing unanimous decision loss to Frank Mir this past Saturday at UFC 130. “Big Country” came under heavy fire from company president Dana White after the post-fight press conference wrapped. White claimed Nelson looked “terrible” and was “borderline embarrassing” in the night’s co-main event.

MMA’s big boss said he was scheduled to meet with Nelson this Friday to discuss the 34-year-old’s future.

Victoria Justice, Christina Milian and more pick a range of Brit classics like 'Slave 4 U' and new-school bangers like 'Till the World Ends.'

On Wednesday night in Los Angeles, Britney Spears' supporters gathered to help the star raise funds for the St. Bernard Project. The Louisiana-based nonprofit helps those affected by Hurricane Katrina to rebuild their homes and their lives. And while much of the talk focused on the good the charity does, MTV News also asked the celeb guests which of Spears' songs would make the final cut on their playlists.

Britney fanatic Selena Gomez said, "Oh goodness! 'Slave 4 U,' that will always be, 'cause that was when it was like, 'Oh, she's not a girl anymore, she's a woman.' The controversy, I loved it!"

Christina Milian preferred one of Brit's more heartfelt songs. " 'Everytime,' it's emotional, and she's beautiful," Milian told us on the event's red carpet, where we saw a number of stars, including Kim Kardashian and Kellan Lutz. "She sang it great."

Spears' "Crossroads" co-star Taryn Manning knew Spears way back when, but her favorite song is a more contemporary Britney tune. " 'Till the World Ends' is incredible," she dished. "I think it's seriously one of her best songs, probably the reason why she went platinum like that."

Sabi, Spears' "(Drop Dead) Beautiful" collaborator, who's set to hit up some Femme Fatale Tour shows this summer, said, "Really, my favorite song had to be 'Toxic' or Slave 4 U. It's between those two. I just think those two are like so sexy, badass songs."

Hilary Duff found it hard to narrow it down. "I like everything," she said. "I liked the whole 'Toxic' thing. I really liked 'Womanizer'."

When Victoria Justice listens to Spears, she likes to kick it old school. "I'm a really big fan of her older stuff," she told us, "So, like, 'Overprotected' and 'Lucky'."

"Vampire Diaries" star Kat Graham enjoys both old and new Britney Spears. "I like 'Hold It Against Me,' I must say. I'm just kind of in with the times right now," she said. "But '... Baby One More Time' is always a classic."

What's your all-time favorite Britney song? Let us know in the comments!

'The Hangover Part II' Smashes Box-Office Record

'The Hangover Part II' Smashes Box-Office Record

Todd Phillips' sequel has biggest opening weekend for a live-action comedy.
By Ryan J. Downey

Two years ago, "The Hangover" writer/director Todd Phillips told MTV News: "I love 'The Hangover' so much and I think we could crush it with the sequel." In terms of ticket sales, at least, he was right.

"The Hangover Part II" crushed a box-office record over the weekend, grossing $86 million from Friday-to-Sunday, the biggest opening ever for a live-action comedy. Thanks to the Memorial Day holiday and a Thursday debut, the buddy sequel (which swaps Las Vegas for Thailand) has already made $117 million. "The Hangover" opened with $45 million in 2009. "Part II" stands just behind "The Matrix Reloaded" on the list of R-rated openings.

Another sequel, "Kung Fu Panda 2," was the #2 movie at the box office, according to studio estimates. Featuring the voice of Jack Black in the title role, the animated kids' flick debuted with $47.8 million over the four-day weekend. The movie's 3-D screenings accounted for about 45 percent of its business. The film's opening weekend total was less than that of the first film, despite many positive reviews. "The Hangover Part II," by comparison, was a flop with critics.

"Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" took in $39.5 million for a two-week $153.1 million domestic total. "Bridesmaids" held strong with $16.5 million to come in at #4 with an $85.1 million total. "Thor" rounded out the top five with $9.4 million for a $159.7 million total.

Filmmaker Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris" managed to enter the top 10 despite playing at only 52 locations. (By comparison, "The Hangover" sequel was available at over 3600 locations). Starring Owen Wilson and bolstered by strong reviews, "Midnight" was #7 at the box office with $1.9 million for a two-week total of $2.8 million. Also in limited release, "The Tree of Life," starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn, opened at four locations with $373,000.

Mutant superhero prequel "X-Men: First Class" hits theaters this weekend. As of press time, the latest entry in Fox's "X-Men" franchise boasts a perfect 100 percent positive rating with critics, according to movie review site Rotten Tomatoes. This weekend's limited releases include "Beginners" (starring Ewan McGregor), "Beautiful Boy" and the Ben Stiller produced "Submarine."

'Hangover Part II' Stars Call Bangkok A 'Tropical Metropolis'

'Hangover Part II' Stars Call Bangkok A 'Tropical Metropolis'

'It's just so colorful and eclectic and stimulating and overwhelming,' Ed Helms tells MTV News.

For those getting ready to see "The Hangover Part II" this weekend, there are a few things we'd like you to know about the film before settling into your seat with your popcorn.

First, check out our handy cheat sheet on the film. Next, we have a few fun details straight from the stars themselves — Ed Helms, Bradley Cooper and Zach Galifianakis — who have discussed Cooper's head-shaving skills and promised "a lot more comedy" in the second installment.

There is also the new-and-improved setting of Bangkok, Thailand. When we caught up with the actors recently, we asked them to describe filming on location in Bangkok.

"Bangkok is a tropical metropolis," Helms said. "It is very hot and steamy, incredibly urban, [there are] huge skyscrapers mixed in with abject poverty right tucked around it. It's totally mind-blowing."

"[It's a] Buddhist culture," Cooper jumped in. "Buddhist/Muslim."

"It's just an unbelievably dense place," Helms continued. "And it's just so colorful and eclectic and stimulating and overwhelming that even as a tourist with nothing to do but have fun, it's overwhelming. When you're trying to work there, it's brutal."

The boys then briefly debated how many people live in the city: 9 million, according to Helms, 12 million, according to Galifianakis (according to the U.N., it's 9.3 million).

"It also sounds like a 13-year-old tourist named everything," Galifianakis added with a grin, before naming a few familiar Bangkok-ian colloquialisms. "Bangkok, ladyboy, pu pu platter," he listed, trailing off into a few giggles.

Check out everything we've got on "The Hangover Part II."

While most spent this Memorial Day weekend at BBQs, the beach or in the club, T.I. spent his behind bars. But he also found a way to give back. Tip, who is currently incarcerated at the Forrest City Correctional Facility in Forrest City, Arkansas, in the midst of an 11-month bid for a probation violation after an L.A. drug arrest, sponsored a bus trip for the 46 family members of 14 fellow inmates to visit the prison.

"I've been blessed to receive tons and tons of mail from my fans, family and friends, as well as get visits on a regular basis. Unfortunately some guys aren't as fortunate," T.I. said in a statement obtained by MTV News. "There are a lot of good dudes in here that haven't been able to see there loved ones in years. Their families can't afford the trip so I wanted to help out."

Family and friends who took part in the bus trip, dubbed "To See a Love One," boarded a chartered bus in Atlanta and Alabama on Saturday and visited the prison on Sunday and Monday (May 30).

T.I. turned himself in to authorities last November and reported to the Forrest City federal facility, the same place where he served nine months in 2009 after he struck a plea deal stemming from his 2007 gun case. The rapper was released in March 2010 and sent to a halfway house to complete his sentence. In September of the same year, T.I. and his wife were arrested in Los Angeles for a driving violation and charged with drug possession. L.A. authorities eventually dropped the charges against Tip, but the Grand Hustle CEO was found in violation of his probation and thus sent back to prison.

UFC 130: Rampage vs. Hamill – Predictions

UFC 130: Rampage vs. Hamill – Predictions

Of all the UFC events that have taken place recently, perhaps UFC 130: Rampage vs. Hamill is the one that has been struck the most by the injury bug, in terms of what the original fight card was supposed to look like.

Originally, Frankie Edgar was supposed to face Gray Maynard; but as luck would have it, both went down with injury and the bout would subsequently be cancelled.

Meanwhile, Thiago Silva was to originally face Quinton Jackson but Silva bowed out for alleged reasons ranging from an injury to a rumored whisper about Silva failing a pre-fight drug test at UFC 125. Nonetheless, Rashad Evans was supposed to replace Silva but like the Edgar-Maynard bout, this didn’t pan out either. Matt Hamill was picked to take on Jackson after the smoke cleared.

Also, Brad Pickett had to be scratched from the event because of injury; as a result, Demetrious Johnson took his place as the opponent of Miguel Torres.

Renan Barao, because of the change to the Torres-Johnson fight, will instead take on Cole Escovedo.

Another injury that changes UFC 130 involved Norifumi Yamamoto; he was to face Chris Cariaso, but an injury turned this bout into Cariaso against Michael McDonald instead.

Lastly, Cody McKenzie was to take on Bart Palaszewski in this event, but again, an injury erased Palaszewski from consideration in this fight and UFC president Dana White announced that Gleison Tibau would replace McKenzie on the fight card. Long story short – Tibau vs. Rafaello Oliveira.

After all of that, replacements would be found, and the card will take place. Speaking of which, UFC 130 will take place Saturday night from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV and will have 10 bouts, featuring Jackson vs. Hamill as the main event while Frank Mir will face Roy Nelson in the co-main event.

Below, look for the bout’s opponents, a narrative and my prediction, respectively. With that being said, here are my picks for UFC 130: Rampage vs. Hamill:

Last event (UFC 129): 9-3

PRELIMINARY CARD (FACEBOOK)

  • Renan Barao vs. Cole Escovedo: Barao is 25-1 with a no-contest in his ledger while Escovedo is 17-6. Barao is for the most part a submission-type of fighter while Escovedo has won 10 of his fights by submission. This fight will be one in which whoever establishes position on the mat and keeps busy will prevail. I haven’t seen a whole lot of the Brazilian (Barao), but his brown belt in BJJ should serve him well during the fight. Barao by unanimous decision.
  • Michael McDonald vs. Chris Cariaso: McDonald, the youngest fighter in this fight card, should have his hands full facing Caraiso. Cannot discount the fact that McDonald is a kickboxer/BJJ combo fighter. Apparently it works for him as his 12-1 record (7 wins by KO)indicates that he’s well-ronded. Caraiso, on the other hand, is a Muay Thai specialist, with seven of his 11 wins going the distance which suggests that he can’t finish his opponents with regularity. McDonald should be able to take Cariaso to the mat and ground-and-pound his way to the victory. McDonald by TKO, late-1st round.
  • Gleison Tibau vs. Rafaello Oliveira: This bout shouldn’t last very long just due to the fact that Tibau’s wrestling, BJJ and conditioning (cardio) will be superior to what Oliveira brings to the fight. Look for this one to be won by Tibau by submission as Oliveira will likely be choked out. Tibau by submission, early-2nd round.

PRELIMINARY CARD (SPIKE TV)

  • Kendall Grove vs. Tim Boetsch: An interesting matchup here. Grove, based on his UFC record alone, could be in a win-or-else situation here while Boetsch has fared better with the promotion. Nonetheless, Grove does have the BJJ/Muay Thai background going for him while Boetsch specializes in wrestling and Jeet Kune Do. I look for this fight to go to the mat, with neither fighter being able to dominate for a long stretch. In other words, this one goes to the judges. Boetsch by unanimous decision.
  • Miguel Torres vs. Demetrious Johnson: A replacement bout that will be better than advertised. Torres is going to have a huge advantage over Johnson, in my humble opinion. His 39-3 record in MMA is no fluke, folks. Anyone who has watched his bouts knows he’s a submission specialist; on the flip side, Johnson isa wrestler, pure and simple. I’m going on record and pick this quick bout as the Submission of the Night candidate.  Torres by submission, mid-2nd round.

MAIN CARD

  • Brian Stann vs. Jorge Santiago: Stann has a diverse type of fighting style (Kickboxing/MCMAP/Submission Wrestling), due in part to his Marine Corps background. Santiago, on the other hand, is a BJJ/Muay Thai combatant. As well-rounded as Stann may be, I expect Santiago to take this bout to the mat and make Stann tap out relatively early. Santiago by submission, mid-2nd round.
  • Thiago Alves vs. Rick Story: Finally, a bout that’s gonna be one that will decided by one punch. In other words, this one will be won by knockout or TKO. Alves should win this one easily, just because Story’s fighting style is wrestling – collegiate wrestling, at that. And as I previously stated, this one will be won by a closed fist to the face – in this case, Alves’ fist meeting Story’s head. my pick for Knockout of the Night. Alves by TKO, early-3rd round.
  • Stefan Struve vs. Travis Browne: Struve is a interesting case study here as while he has beaten some quality opponents. he got his clocked cleaned by Roy Nelson. Not saying that Nelson is a pushover, but come on now. Nevertheless, the Swedish skyscraper, a submission specialist by and large, will take on Browne, who is heavy-handed (codespeak for a striker). This bout could very well be a carbon-copy of the Struve-Nelson bout; however, I think that Struve’s reach will serve him well as he should be able to take down Browne and subsequently choke him out. Struve by submission, mid-2nd round.
  • Frank Mir vs. Roy Nelson: Mir, as most of you already know, is well-rounded in his fight reportoire while Nelson – the Kung Fu Panda of the UFC – surprisingly has BJJ and Shaolin Kung Fu skills, yet can knock you out if you’re not careful. This bout will be tough to call; yet for some reason, I sense that Nelson is gonna persevere and knockout or TKO Mir late in the fight. Don’t let Nelson’s physique fool you – he has very good cardio. My Fight of the Night pick. Nelson by TKO, late 3rd-round.
  • Quinton Jackson vs. Matt Hamill: As much as I love Rampage, you cannot underestimate Hamill and what he brings to the ring Saturday night. Yes, Jackson is a wrestler/boxer; however, Hamill is very well-rounded (Freestyle Wrestling, Greco-Roman Wrestling, Boxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu). And that is a recipe for disaster for Rampage. While most main event fights usually go the distance, this one will not, with Hamill TKOing Jackson in the 3rd round. Hamill by TKO, mid-3rd round.
