With neck and back problems dogging Shane Carwin, he had a couple options to consider:
- Rehabilitation
- Surgery
According to Mike Chiappetta of MMAFighting.com, Carwin will undergo surgery, effectively removing him from the fight that would have pitted him against Roy Nelson on January 1, 2011.
Even without surgery, Carwin was expected to miss a minimum of between 8-12 weeks, yet surgery was the recommended strategy. The procedure that Carwin would undergo was not disclosed, but according to Carwin’s manager Jason Genet, the 35-year old would undergo a procedure that would take care of both the back and neck issues.
As any manager would do, he minimized Carwin’s problems and built him up, as well, saying:
“When Shane was an NFL prospect, he had a back injury where people said not only would he not be able to play in the NFL, he wouldn’t be able to play pro sports.”
“He’s already made it to fight for the heavyweight title. He limped to the mountaintop without all the tools. What happens when he ascends to the mountaintop with everything he’s got?”
Carwin’s most recent action in the Octagom found him at the short end of the stick during a loss to Brock Lesnar at UFC 116.
